Updates from Red Cross Volunteer Winnie Romeril

"Chatting with Adam I mentioned that I feel lucky to be here (in that weird way that seeing devestarion on a huge scale feels lucky)... having the chance to serve in a hands-on way. But the Haitians are the real heros. The Red Cross volunteers here are mostly homeless, most in mourning on some level, and they show up every day and work the same hours doing greuling work. I am in awe of them."

"A highlight today- exchanging baseball caps with an Israeli paramedic. He got my American Red Cross cap from the tsunami, and I got his Magen David Adom (red shield of David) inside the new red crystal. This is the first big international relief operation where the new symbol of humanitarian assistance has been used."
"The Red Cross is training Haitian Red Cross voluneers to do "psychological first aid" with children in the hospitals. The doctors were skeptical at first, but now they see how well the scared children respond. Even after an event like this, children just want to be children and play and be curious."
